40% of UK school children have arrived home from school with sunburn: doubling their risk of skin cancer later in life, yet the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) revealed that 90% of all skin cancer cases could be prevented if exposure to UV rays were controlled.

Here at Deb, we are proactively campaigning to raise awareness of the risks associated with prolonged UV exposure to schools, education professionals and parents. At school, children spend around eight hours outside every week, often when UV radiation is at its strongest, so more must be done to ensure that they are protected.

Schools have a duty of care to safeguard the health of their pupils, which includes working with pupils and their parents to ensure that they have access to sun protection measures, and that they are effectively educated on the importance of sun safety. We are also alerting those who have a duty to protect school children to be aware of the daily UV Index. When the UV level reaches three or above, protection is required.

“Children are unable to protect themselves from the devastating effects that UV radiation can have, which is why it is crucial that when in school, parents feel reassured that their children are effectively protected from the sun,” said Paul Jakeway, Marketing Director here at Deb UK. “We have created a range of UV Protection creams to help prevent skin damage, and are supporting national charity Skcin with their Sun Safe school programme.”

There is also uncertainty about what sun cream factor is appropriate. The minimum sun cream protection you should use is SPF30, and it’s also important to use a sun cream with a broad spectrum UVA protection. Reapplication is crucial too; it is recommended that cream is reapplied liberally every two to three hours.
